The term Prostaglandin(PGs) was coined by VON EULLER in 1935, who believed that this substance originated in the Prostate gland. This was later proved incorrect, as PGs were found in different parts of the body like the lung, thymus, umbilical cord, uterus, kidneys, and the heart. Other areas include amniotic fluid, menstrual fluids, mid seminal vesicles.

The cellular mechanisms of action of PGs are not completely known. PGs are believed to influence concentrations of cyclic nucleotides and calcium ions (Ca++) within cells.

Prostaglandins act in the immune response in suppressor cells, during inflamation, in the gastrointestinal tract. It also promotes vasodilation, biliary, pancreatic, and glucagon secretions. PGs assist in gastric and intestinal cytoprotection, gastric blood flow, while preventing falls in arterial blood pressure. It influences the human reproduction system, male infertility, ovarian function, follicular rupture, luteolysis, urinary contractility and dysmenorrhea. It relaxes the vascular bed decreasing blood pressure and acting in autonomic effector junction of the vas deferens. Human seminal fluid was found to contain considerable amounts of several classical PGs , e.g. PGE I .

It is mainly PGE and PGF that have been implicated in the physiological regulation of different events in the reproductive organs in the human:
(e.g. male fertility, ovulation, the life span of the corpous luteum, tubal contractility, non-pregnant and pregnant uterine contractility)

The modification or stimulation of reproductive events by exogenous prostaglandins has been a major or area of research, thus PGs has found practical application.

VON EULLER suggested that PGs might be involved in the contractile events of ejaculation, since the epididymis, vas deferens, and seminal vesicles contain smooth muscle and prostaglandins have a potent action on such tissue. This suggestion has been reinforced more recently by finding that PGs can influence neurotransmission in the sex accessory tissues of the male.

The effect of PGs on the reproductive system: on vas deferens enhances the contractile responses to nerve stimulation and catecholanines. In general, PGs cause stimulation of reproductive smooth muscle and therefore it was usefully applicable in the treatment of fertility problems. It is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction due to neurogenic vasculogenic, psychogenic or mixed etiology.

It is absorbed by the buccal mucosa faster and it goes into the general circulation with less destruction.

Natural source of prostaglandin is from GORGONLAN SeaWhip (animal source).

It is a potent inhibitor of gastric secretion and stimulant of smooth muscle.
